The Sustainable Coastal Development in a Changing World course explores the relationships between coastal cities and sustainable development in the context of global change. It provides students with an introduction to the concept and practice of sustainability at the global, regional and local level. Also, the course also offers an analytic lens to examine some key emerging challenges in sustainability confronting coastal cities, such as climate change and energy, and the ways in which these challenges have been responded to. Examples from Asia (such as Hong Kong) and other parts of the world are employed to illustrate how key sustainability challenges emerge from local agendas and how coastal cities develop strategies and policies to address these issues. Besides course studies, a half day field trip to Baishi Fort, Wuyuanwan Wetland Park etc. is also included.
