Professor Hong Huasheng stated that the ocean economy is the focus of todays world economic development, therefore ocean economic development should be promoted and ocean discipline built up under the national 12th five year plan.?Marine ecosystem management must be designed to operate at a range of spatial scales, in order to integrate policies and actions at the community scale with policies and actions at the provincial, national and ultimately global scales.
The forum also attracted great attention from media such as the Xinhua news agency, GuangMing Daily, Xiamen TV, Xiamen Broadcast and Television Centre, and Xiamen Daily, who were all present at the forum. Water resources management is a global issue and the concept of integration must be insisted on. Watershed and coastal seas management should be connected in order to realize sustainable coastal development. World Ocean Week has made great steps towards enhancing marine awareness, promoting sustainable development of the marine economy, upgrading marine industry, and promoting cross-strait exchanges and cooperation. In addition, new dynamism and vitality were expected to result in a new round of scientific development in Xiamen. Xiamen University will play an increasingly important role in ocean and coastal zone management through the important sub-platform provided by COMI.
World Ocean Week consisted of a total of eight secondary forums/workshops, a special exhibition and seven marine cultural activities. One of the secondary workshops, Coastal Zone Environmental Management Policy, was also co-organized by COMI and Korea Maritime Institute (KMI).
