Prof. Wen-Yan Chiau Taught a Mini Course for COMI Students in Summer Semester, 2016-2017 Academic Year
As invited by Prof. Xiongzhi Xue, Executive Director of COMI, Prof. Wen-Yan Chiau from Taiwan Ocean University came to teach a mini course on Ocean and Coastal Management in Asia for COMI students from July 3-7, 2017.
Based on the theory of "integrated ocean and coastal management", the Ocean and Coastal Management in Asia course focused on the discussion and exploration on the following issues: 1. Marine ecosystems, common issues and marine policies; 2. Major oceanic agencies and recent legislation; 3. Coastal management and wetland conservation; 4. Climate change, coastal hazards and marine pollution control; and 5. Marine protected areas, underwater cultural heritage and offshore wind farms. Practical experience in some countries and areas in Asia were also introduced and discussed in his class.
Prof. Chiau got his Ph.D. degree in urban and regional planning from University of Pennsylvania, the United States. He has been dedicated to research of diverse areas including marine policy, coastal management, wetland preservation, environmental legislation and environmental protection etc. Prof. Chiau has also been involved in the APEA projects on marine protection and has rich management and research experience on coastal management.
