Dr. Ahsan Habib Visited and Delivered Lectures
Date2016-02-21

As invited by Dr. Minggang Cai, Dr. Ahsan Habib, Professor at Department of Chemistry (Analytical and Inorganic Section), University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, visited COMI and delivered two lectures on “Passive air sampling of polychlorinated biphenyls and polychlorinated naphthalenes across East Asia Region (Japan, China and Korea) and “Current status of heavy metals present in the rivers Buriganaga and Turag (Dhaka City, Bangladesh)” to COMI faculty and students on February 19th, 2016.

Firstly, Dr. Ahsan Habib introduced the paper entitled “Passive air monitoring of PCBs and PCNs across East Asia: A comprehensive congener evaluation for source characterization”, which is published on Chemospher cooperating with Hogarh et al. This research investigated the spatial distribution of aerial PCBs and PCNs across East Asia region, which existing a rural–urban gradient of PCBs and PCNs in both Japan and Korea. However, a south-north gradient of PCBs distributed along the eastern stretch of China, the PCNs were somewhat equally distributed across the country. Based on statistical analysis, the results showed that air PCBs and PCNs across East Asia seemed related mostly to combustion and re-emissions (probably from contaminated environmental compartments such as soils).

Furthermore, Dr. Ahsan Habib reported the concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Ni, Cu and Cr) in water, sediment and some fishes of Buriganaga River and Turag River, Bangladesh. In some sites of the study areas, heavy metals’ concentrations are higher than the safe recommended value, which suggests that these sites are affected by heavy metal pollutants, and the water, sediment and fish are not fully safe for human health and ecosystem. The gradual development of industry and discharge of untreated domestic sewage may further exacerbate the situation in coming years. Moreover, Dr. Ahsan Habib also introduced the characterization of ZnO-TiO2 nanocomposites and their application in photodecoloration of industrial water.

Lastly, Dr. Ahsan Habib had a lively discussion with COMI faculties and students after the lecture on the passive sampling device of PCBs and PCNs, data analysis and possible joint researches in developing countries in the near future.
