Workshops Co-organized by COMI during WOW2016

The International Workshop on Marine Disaster Prevention and Mitigation of 2016 World Ocean Week (WOW) was held at the Wyndham Grand Xiamen Haicang on Nov. 5th, 2016. Sponsored by Fujian Provincial Department of Ocean and Fisheries and China-ASEAN Marine Cooperation Centre, this workshop was co-organized by COMI and Taiwan Strait Marine Forecasting Center and co-convened by Collaborative Innovation Center for Peaceful Development of Cross-Strait Relations. Nearly 100 participants coming from America, Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam etc. attended the workshop to discuss the front edge issues in the fields of marine disaster prevention and response, marine disaster forecasting and cooperation opportunities between China and ASEAN countries etc. The main objective of this years workshop is to provide a communication and mutual learning platform for discussion among scholars, professionals and especially scientists and government officials in charge of marine natural disaster response in China and ASEAN countries.
This workshop consists of two sessions, namely marine disaster prevention and response and marine disaster forecasting. Mr. Touch Seang Tana, member of the Economics, Social and Cultural Council, Office of the Council of Ministers, Kingdom of Cambodia, chaired the first session. While the speakers in this session shared management status and advanced experience of Cambodia, Malaysia, Australia, Vietnam and other countries and regions in marine disaster prevention and response. Prof. Fakhru’l-Razi, professor of Department of Civil Engineering, National Defense University of Malaysia, chaired the second session, and the speakers made a detailed introduction of marine observation and forecasting system, ocean monitoring network and early warning system in mainland China and Taiwan, and emphasized the importance of marine forecasting information sharing and regional cooperation. In the panel discussion part, all the speakers and participants have had an in-depth communication and discussion on the application of simulation model and database in marine disaster prevention and mitigation, multi-disciplinary support in definition of the main cause of marine disasters, the construction of transboundary coordination mechanism of marine disaster prevention and mitigation in China and ASEAN countries, the potential cooperation opportunities between China and ASEAN countries on marine disaster prevention and mitigation in the future etc. In order to jointly tackle marine disasters caused by climate change and human activities, all the speakers and participants unanimously agreed to continue to establish a platform for cooperation between China and ASEAN countries on marine disaster prevention and mitigation.
During the WOW2016, COMI have also actively participated in the main forum of 2016WOW and co-organized the Regional Workshop on Catalyzing Blue Economy Investment in East Asia, which was sponsored by Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA).
